About Verdy Leung
 

Verdy Leung is a Senior Professor of Ikebana, the champion of Ikenobo World Cup, the chairperson of the Ikenobo Hong Kong Chapter, and a renowned floral and multimedia artist bases in Hong Kong. He studied ikebana in Japan and graduated from the highest training institution in ikebana - The Ikenobo Central Research Institute of Ikebana in Kyoto, Japan. He studies under grand masters of ikebana, Hideo Shibata and Morhiko Furugawa at the Institute.

Starting as a multimedia artist, Verdy's creative works have been awarded and exhibited internationally, e.g. Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, etc. He has been inivited to exhibit and contribute ikebana works by international organizations and publishers. His works has been published in International Floral Arts (published by Stichtinf Kunst Boek). He is also the only Hong Kong ikebana artist to be featured in Ikebana: Opposites Attract (published by Stichtinf Kunst Boek).

He received intensive professional ikebana training from the headquarters of Ikenobo. He graduated as the valedictorian from the Ikenobo Central Research Institute Tokyo School and has been awarded the “Tachibana Award” (the best performance award) in 4 consecutive years.

After graduation, he continued to study advanced research classes in all ikebana styles (classic Rikka, Rikka, Shoka, Free style) under grand masters Hideo Shibata, Morhiko Furugawa, Manabu Noda, Mitsumasa Toyoda and Yasuto Sasaki at the Institute. Moreover, he is also the first foreigner to be awarded outstanding prizes in the largest ikebana exhibiton in Kyoto, "Kyuutanabata Ikebana Exhibition", competition section. In 2022, he beat over 100 competitors from different countries and became the Champion of Ikenobo World Cup.

Prof. Leung is also an experienced art educator with extensive teaching experiences in tertiary institutions, e.g. School of Design in Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The University of Western Australia, The Middlesex University, etc. With his background in contemporary Western art and design, his floral design works show the spirit of ikebana with skills and creative elements borrowed from contemporary Western art. He has also been invited by the Hospitality Industry Training and Development Centre to hold training course in floral design for hotel and catering professionals. Benefited from his academic background, he is also an expert in the history and culture of ikebana. He has been invited by the media and diffferent organizations to introduce ikebana to the public.

Currently, Prof. Leung is the Creative Director of Kado Studio. Apart from his profession as a florist, he has been working on promoting ikebana to the public and have started teaching ikebana in secondary school.
